Learning Through Play: Why Play Matters in the Early Years

Learning Through Play: Why Play Matters in the Early Years

For young children play is not the opposite of learning. It is one of the main ways they learn.

When a child stacks blocks, pours water, draws a line or pretends to cook, they are learning. They practise counting, sizes and shapes, use new words, solve small problems and discover how things work. Good early years education uses this natural way of learning instead of replacing it.

Different kinds of play build different skills. Building and puzzles develop thinking and patience. Drawing, painting and clay develop hand control that later helps with writing. Songs and stories develop language and memory. Running, climbing and ball games develop balance and strength. Pretend play develops imagination and understanding of other people’s feelings.

Playing with other children teaches sharing, waiting for a turn and solving disagreements, which are important skills for school and for life.

You can support learning through play at home without special toys. Read a short story every day, sing together, let your child help with simple tasks like sorting socks or setting the table, and ask open questions such as: What do you think will happen next? Follow your child’s interest and give them time, without correcting every attempt.

Every child develops at their own pace. If you have a concern about speech, movement or behaviour, talk to your child’s doctor and to the nursery team, who can share what they observe during the day.

General parenting information only; every child is different. For any health or development concern, speak with your child’s doctor.
